Saint Ark explains what light rail is.
The abbreviation for light rail is light rail or light track. It refers to a type of railway that is laid with lightweight materials, resulting in a total weight much less than that of conventional railways, which is why it is called light rail. Light rail is a type of railway that exists in contrast to ordinary railways, while heavy rail is the common traditional railway.
Conventional railways operate with high power consumption and high speeds, with long trains capable of carrying tens of thousands of tons of cargo or passenger capacity. Even passenger cars are equipped with a large number of seats, as well as facilities like sleeping berths, bathrooms, kitchens, and electrical rooms, resulting in a heavy vehicle body and high load-bearing requirements. Therefore, proper railway construction is necessary to support the weight of the vehicles; otherwise, it would not be able to bear the weight. All railways are standard railways, including intercity railways, suburban railways, and so on. Subway systems generally have a large passenger capacity and also commonly use standard railways.
Light rail services do not involve large railway locomotives but instead serve lightweight trams, light rail trains, or monorails. The passenger capacity is limited, and the facilities inside the carriages are quite simple, so there is no need for heavy materials to lay the railway, as this would only increase material costs.
This is also the essential difference between light rail and heavy rail. Currently, there are no comprehensive and clear regulations for light rail, so there is no officially recognized light rail in the country. In operating units, there are signs for railway lines and maglev lines, but there are no signs for light rail lines, nor has any light rail company been established. The common ones are only subway companies or companies related to light rail systems.
There is no official terminology in the country yet. According to vehicle types, there are classifications based on passenger capacity and load capacity. For light rail trains, there are relevant explicit regulations, which essentially refer to subway Type C vehicles. Light rail is powered by electricity and serves as a system for passenger transport within cities, positioned between standard trams and rapid transit systems.
Light rail is suitable for medium passenger volumes and has a joint nature, allowing it to connect with any type of transportation. There are not many light rail manufacturers in our country, as the use of light rail is not widespread, so the number of light rail manufacturers is also limited. However, the products produced by these manufacturers are of guaranteed quality and quantity, and are not inferior to those from abroad. These manufacturers significantly contribute to providing convenience in people's lives.
